چکیده
Abstract The Asian clam ( Corbicula fluminea ) is one of the rapidly spreading, very successful aquatic invasive species, which has become established widely in many parts world. Its spread assumed to be by both passive and active dispersal. However, importance pedal movement dispersal hardly known. Since there was no direct evidence this phenomenon, field observations were combined with laboratory experiments find out if clams move upstream actively, how affected quality substrate, density clams, water velocity. Field conducted at a small watercourse waterborne transport. Experiments done an indoor artificial stream system, where distances moved adult measured via digital image analysis. Substrate grain size, starting velocity significantly movement. Fine sediment slow flow facilitated spread, while clear pattern density-dependent Also, we found preference for either or downstream maximum distance lab predicts more than 0.15 km/y direction, our detected much faster (0.5–11 km/y) movement, might explained dispersal, such as human transport ecto- endozoochory. Overall, it seems that species cannot read long-distance migration.

Oxidative stress and histological changes following exposure to diamond nanoparticles in the freshwater Asian clam Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774).
Recently, the scientific community became aware of the potential ability of nanoparticles to cause toxicity in living organisms. Therefore, many of the implications for aquatic ecosystems and its effects on living organisms are still to be evaluated and fully understood. In this study, the toxicity of nanodiamonds (NDs) was assessed in the freshwater bivalve (Corbicula fluminea) following expos...
متن کاملLow Genetic Diversity and High Invasion Success of Corbicula fluminea (Bivalvia, Corbiculidae) (Müller, 1774) in Portugal
The Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea, is an invasive alien species (IAS) originally from Asia that has spread worldwide causing major ecological and economic impacts in aquatic ecosystems. Here, we evaluated C. fluminea genetic (using COI mtDNA, CYTb mtDNA and 18S rDNA gene markers), morphometric and sperm morphology variation in Portuguese freshwater ecosystems. The COI marker revealed a single ...
متن کاملEffects of temperature and salinity on metabolic rate of the Asiatic clam Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774)
UNLABELLED The effects of temperature and salinity on the metabolism of the Asiatic clam Corbicula fluminea (mollusca, Lamellibranchia) were studied experimentally. Firstly, three indexes of basal metabolism (oxygen consumption rate, OCR; ammonia excretion rate, AER; and CO2 emission rate, CER), patterns of diurnal rhythm and O: N ratios were measured for three size ranges (large: h = 25.54 ± 1...
متن کاملEffects of Upper-Limit Water Temperatures on the Dispersal of the Asian Clam Corbicula fluminea
Temperature is a determinant environmental variable in metabolic rates of organisms ultimately influencing important physiological and behavioural features. Stressful conditions such as increasing temperature, particularly within high ranges occurring in the summer, have been suggested to induce flotation behaviour in Corbicula fluminea which may be important in dispersal of this invasive speci...
متن کاملComparison of Selenium bioaccumulation in the clams Corbicula fluminea and Potamocorbula amurensis: a bioenergetic modeling approach.
Selenium uptake from food (assimilation efficiency) and dissolved phase (influx rate) as well as loss kinetics (efflux rate) were compared between two bivalves, Corbicula fluminea and Potamocorbula amurensis. The effects of salinity and temperature on these kinetic parameters for both clam species also were evaluated. The Asiatic clam, C. fluminea, more efficiently assimilated Se associated wit...
